QUESTIONS TO A BUTTERFLY
by Mary A Cunningham
I'd like to ask a butterfly "Was it worth the pain?
Was struggle through the former self really worth the gain?
Did you feel that you had failed, hating who you were?
Or know yourself well enough to secretly endure?
As you crawled upon the leaves, did you dream to fly,
knowing that to leap too soon, surely you would die?
Did appearance as a worm deny who you were to be?
Or did you look within yourself another you to see?
Time alone could bring about the change that was to come.
A butterfly now you are, your new life has begun.
As you flutter here with me, I marvel at your flight.
A worm upon the leaves of green, now your colors bright.
Beautiful is just a word, but beauty you've become.
Free now to be who you've been old and new as one.
Taking flight you leave me now, insight you've left behind
If I could ask a butterfly I'd find that I've been blind.
